It is important to understand how easily arrogance/projection may be mistaken for epiphany/”awakening”, and that when dealing with a practice such as purification of the self, a constant obstacle is the subtle machinations of the ego to maintain this delusion. So long as the mind of the wayfarer is directed toward their projection of what they construct as a significant “spiritual moment”, we are satisfied that the experience has fulfilled our expectation of the path can offer us, but we understand this subconsciously and so the we remain oblivious to the mistake we have made.

The emphasis on humility is a consistent theme throughout the journey toward annihilation in God, but are key in the beginning of the path, and should be cultivated quickly, understood properly and with honesty toward our faults in its regard, and the necessity of correcting our reaction/perception/action in moments where our humility is tested. The believers live within a world that is dominated by the idea of man, cultivated in his own self destruction, that conceptualizes pride as a noble reaction toward a threat to our personal dignity, but dignity is in closeness to God. The station of the believer is privileged in our responsibility toward our Lord’s service, we find in closeness to God a clarity of our existence, that in humility we are free of the subliminal tethers of this world’s deceptions, there is only the servant and his Lord.

With humility, the wayfarer can identify when they’re projecting their presumptions upon spiritual experiences and the state of their faith and how trustworthy their understanding of a belief/practice may be. This can be crucial, to develop the ability to remain consistent in one’s practice even when we are weak in faith, to seek/recall/contemplate the advice of our murshid, and turn toward worship as a refuge without allowing it to become a burden. Humility becomes a protection against ourselves, and is a reminder of how beloved we are to our Lord, that we are so interwoven into His mystery that the greatest endeavor of a human being is to perish to this world, so that even in life their inner state is together with their Lord.
